Kaizen (改善) is the composition of two Japanese terms, KAI (change, improvement) and ZEN (good, better), and means changing for the better, continuous improvement. It was coined by Masaaki Imai in 1986 to describe the business philosophy that underpinned the successes of Japanese industry in the 1980s. In the context in which the term was coined, Kaizen is translated as "continuous improvement".
